Hyaluronic acid (HA) is one of the most universally loved skincare ingredients — suitable for all skin types, instantly effective, and with a strong body of clinical evidence. But there's more to it than simply "apply and hydrate".
Molecular weight is the key variable most people overlook. High molecular weight HA (>1,000 kDa) sits on the skin's surface, forming a plumping, moisture-locking film. It delivers an immediate smoothing effect and is excellent for dry or mature skin. Low molecular weight HA (<50 kDa) penetrates into the epidermis, hydrating from within — more effective for addressing deep dehydration and fine lines over time.
The most effective formulas use a multi-weight approach. Our products combine three molecular weights: high for surface-level smoothing, mid-range for epidermal hydration, and low molecular weight for deeper delivery. This layered approach gives both instant and lasting results.
Application technique affects efficacy significantly. Apply to slightly damp skin — HA is a humectant, meaning it draws water from its environment. On dry skin in a dry climate, it can actually draw moisture from the deeper layers of your skin, leading to temporary tightness. Locking it in with a moisturiser immediately after application prevents this.
Finally, concentration isn't everything. A formula with 2% HA isn't necessarily better than one with 0.5% — what matters more is the molecular weight distribution, the supporting formula (pH, other actives), and how it feels and performs on your specific skin.
